Overall Purpose

The Board of Trustees are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, developing the organisational aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.

Ovacome is seeking to recruit trustees with experience of ovarian cancer. We would particularly welcome trustees from a minority ethnic background or from our under-represented groups, these include:

  • Black, indigenous or people of colour
  • Those who identify as LGBTQIA+
  • Those over the age of 70
  • Those with experience of poverty or living in areas of deprivation
  • Those who are rurally isolated or have not been treated at a specialist ovarian cancer centre

Our work is to support those affected by ovarian cancer at the right time and in the right way and to this end we need to ensure that we have good cash flow and the appropriate policies and financial procedures in place.  


Main Responsibilities of all trustees

  • To ensure that the charity and its representatives function within the legal and regulatory framework of the sector and in line with the organisations’ governing document, continually striving for best practice in governance.
  • To uphold the fiduciary duty invested in the position, undertaking such duties in a way that adds to public confidence and trust in the charity.
  • To determine the overall direction and development of the charity through good governance and a clear strategy.
  • Act in the best interest of the charity, our beneficiaries and future beneficiaries at all times.
  • Promote and develop the charity in order for it to grow and maintain its relevance to society.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality about all sensitive/confidential information received in the course of trustee’s responsibilities to the charity.



The trustee duties at Ovacome will take approximately 7 hours per month, the successful candidate will ideally have the following attributes and experience:

  • Experience of ovarian cancer (either personally or with a family member)
  • Willing to share views and knowledge.
  • You must be innovative, creative and ambitious regarding the organisation’s prospects, identifying key areas for promotion and growth. You will be working with the CEO to agree strategy and measurable deliverables.
  • Champion a positive approach to change and opportunity with a willingness to break-down taboos surrounding ovarian cancer.

Regular time commitments amount to about 7 hours per month and involve:

  • Input into the strategy of the charity.
  • Due diligence tasks.
  • Supporting events.
  • A monthly conference call with trustees, which normally takes 60-90 minutes.


Accountable to:

As the Board are responsible and liable for the governance and functioning of the charity, trustees are accountable in varying degrees to a variety of stakeholders, including: service users, members and the Charity Commission.
