Marathon 99 update

Congratulations to our 1999 runners on completing the 1999 London Marathon: Phil Graham, Marcus Jones, Anthony Graham, Frances Hodges and Jean Hens who sent us the letter on the right with her cheque. So far we have received cheques totalling £12,556, an absolutely amazing amount that we could only have dreamed of. Thank you all very much for your commitment to Ovacome. I hope you all enjoyed the event as much as our editor, Debbie Howells, did last year.

Frances Hodges had a very good reason for wanting to complete the London Marathon. She lost her daughter, Debbie, aged 23, from ovarian cancer last July. She felt that she wanted to repay Ovacome for all the help they gave her during her difficult time and is so determined to continue to raise awareness of Ovacome and the early detection of ovarian cancer. Frances ran with her two friends, Barbara Kier and Sue Nicholson (pictured together below), and together they raised an amazing £6,184.68 - well done and thank you.

"Four years ago when my sister Lynne was diagnosed as having ovarian cancer I was compelled to do something, however small, perhaps just to shoulder some of the pain. I decided to run the marathon and raise sponsorship for the charity of my sister's choice. At that time she had received much information from Ovacome and so this became her choice, though it was the first time I had heard of the charity.

That was in 1995 and I have applied to the London Marathon ever since, and in fact had almost forgotten my well-meaning intention to participate in the event. My entry letter in December 1998 came as something of a shock. Leaving things until after Christmas seemed a wise decision, so as the new year began I started to train. From an absolute couch potato to a slim, honed athlete does not happen in just four months, having lost no weight (a mere almost 15 stone) I did become much fitter, but it still looked like a mountain to climb.

While Lynne was moving from treatment to treatment, there were times when she was so low that I thought I would be running in her memory. But Lynne won't be beaten, and when she actually jogged the last half-mile of the marathon with me I was filled with so much admiration and pride that the pain of the 26 miles was forgotten. There are women like Lynne all over the country who are strong, focused and determined and I am so proud to have been involved in the process of laughing, crying and understanding this scenario.

Of course, I would choose not to be touched by this disease but good has come out of all situations for us to learn and move forward, I am humbled by people who deal with terminal illness in this manner. Thank you Lynne for teaching me this lesson. I hope that the £2,025 I raised will help other families to understand and support each other. Lynne's illness means that she has a pretty good idea of what will cause her death, no one knows when. We don't know when OR what.
My T-shirt said it all "Ovacome: Fat, un-fit and fifty but I'm running for life and Lynne! Good luck to Ovacome. I love you Lynne".

Tea time with Madalen

Madalen Baynes decided to hold a coffee morning on 8 April at the 2nd Sawbridgeworth Brownie Hut where she is Brown Owl. Madalen invited friends, Brownies and their parents to the event. More than £300 was raised and Madalen also intents to boost the total by selling £1 raffle tickets for a pair of Virgin Airways tickets to Shannon which unfortunately arrived too late to sell on the day. Congratulations and thank you, Madelen, from all of us at Ovacome.
