On April 21, 2024 I will be running the London Marathon in support of the national UK ovarian cancer charity Ovacome and in loving memory of my dear friend Kimberly Martin Smith.

Kim and I met our freshman year at college through her twin sister Danielle who also attended the same university. The universe brought us together in what seemed like unlikely circumstances. Kim and I became college roommates the following year and our friendship continued for the next 25+ years.

In 2018, Kim was diagnosed and treated for advanced ovarian cancer. After she completed her treatment, Kim, Danielle and I set a goal to run the NYC Marathon the following year to celebrate her remission. The cancer would return and Kim fought it with grace, immense fortitude and incredible courage until November 18, 2020. Since then Danielle and I have both run marathons in Kim's memory and I have absolutely no doubt Kim's strength will be with me again on Marathon day.

For anyone who didn't know Kim, she had the most beautiful smile, a distinct sense of humor, incredible wit and a memorable laugh that I'll never forget.

I've set a personal fundraising goal of USD $3,500 and would kindly ask that you please consider donating any amount big or small, to help support Ovacome.

Thank you,
Shan

About Ovacome

Ovacome is a strong community for those who have been diagnosed, those who think that they might be at risk, friends and family, and healthcare professionals.  Ovacome exists to reduce isolation, provide expert information, promote understanding of ovarian cancer and its symptoms, and to support those affected by it in their time of need.

Ovacome’s specialist support team is there to help those living with ovarian cancer navigate their treatment, care and life beyond the disease through the charity’s telephone support line, email, and 24-hour forum. Ovacome also hosts online and in-person groups, workshops, and events where people affected can meet others in similar circumstances, share advice, make friends, and offer encouragement to one another in a safe environment.

Ovacome receives no government funding and so relies on its donors and fundraisers to make its life-changing work possible. Your generosity could help someone affected by ovarian cancer access the vital support and resources they need.  Wai Shan Lui
