LOT 31

Crate of fine wine (reserve £250)

A crate of 12 fine wines, complete with full tasting notes for each bottle. The box includes one St Julien as old as 1975.

Tasting notes:

Chateau Gruaud Larose 1975, Grand Cru Classe (St Julien)  A titan of a wine. The colour is that of a 6-year old, not 46-year old, and it is quite possible that the wine will outlive us all. It remains an old-style claret with a lot of tannin behind the brutal power of the fruit, which will drink well for another quarter century, and is best served decanted after a very brief rest. The kind of wine no longer made in Bordeaux (or elsewhere).  Drink now - 2045.

Volnay "Clos de la Barre" 1996, 1er Cru (L.Jadot)  The house of Jadot makes classic, well structured and long-lived Burgundy, and this Volnay is no exception.  Having reached its 25th birthday, the wine has mellowed considerably and offers an intriguing bouquet dominated by strawberries. There is still quite a bit of acidic bite, which suggests that this is better with food and will benefit from decanting. Hedonistic Pinot Noir in a top vintage. Drink now - 2023.

Pommard "Clos de la Commaraine" 2004, 1er Cru (L.Jadot)  Another Burgundy by Jadot, one of my absolute favourite producers, and another powerful Pinot Noir. This is a monopole premier cru vineyard in Pommard, which has been farmed by the Jadot's for decades, and produces earthy, gritty and very rustic wines which take time to evolve and show their best. This has now, however, finally entered the optimum drinking window and will just like its Volnay sibling above be at its best with food. Drink now - 2025.

Barolo "Rocche" 1998 (A.Settimo)  The wine comes from one of the grandest and most famous vineyards in Barolo - Rocche. This is a place reknowned for creating wines of extreme finesse, which develop great aromatic flavour profiles, not power. This beaty from Settimo is no exception. Serve in wide glasses for maximum bouquet, and plan on drinking it relatively soon, as the wine has reached maturity. Drink now - 2023.

Brunello di Montalcino 1997 (Pertimali)  In a vintage that at the time of release was dubbed a miracle in the wine press, and since left us with so many disappointments, this remains one of very few Tuscan reds that have truly delivered what was promised all those years ago. Livio Sassetti makes wines in a slightly rustic, backward style, which needs time in bottle to show its best. Decisively backward and muted at the age of 10, brutally tannic and unforgiving at 15, this is now an explosive offering of brambly red and black fruit, Asian spices and leather. Make sure to decant before serving. Drink now - 2027.

Terra di Lavoro 2002 (Galardi)  One of the most powerful wines made anywhere in the world. Only in lighter vintages, like '02, can the person who purchased the wine expect to be enjoying it in peak condition - it really is that long-lived. A serious drop of red, made mostly from Aglianico, a grape known as the "Barolo from the South" in Italy. This is a true rarity and very difficult to find thanks to the limited production. Drink now - 2032.

Shiraz Reserve 2002 (Fox Creek)  The wine is plump, fruit forward and surprisingly elegant, but there are still biting tannins in the end so decanting is the way to go. Very hard to resist now, but this will still live for many years from now. Fox Creek has been going for more than a quarter of a century and this bottle proves why they are considered among the very best Shiraz winemakers in the world. Drink now – 2027.

The Steading 2001 (Torbreck)  An Australian version of Chateneuf-de-Pape, based mostly on Grenache and made by one of the greatest producers/winemakers in Australia, Dave Powell. The colour is now starting to show orange reflexes and the wine has entered its plateau of maturity, but it will still provide pleasure for years to come. Drink now - 2026.

Meursault "Perrieres" 1999, 1er Cru (Gaunoux)  This is classic, understated Chardonnay at its best - the wine is now fully mature and has developed beautifully. There are tones of exotic fruits, honey and citrus on the nose, and the aftertaste is long, fresh and clean. Textbook Meursault from the greatest vineyard in the area, made by one of their finest producers, and a white Burgundy of almost mythical proportions. Drink with a rich dish of fish, or on its own when in great company. Drink now - 2024.

Chablis “Montee de Tonnerre” 2002, 1er Cru (Servin)  Superb Chablis from the best 1er Cru vineyard, and arguably from the best vintage of the 21st century. The wine is fully mature, but remains surprisingly pale in colour and retains the typical crystalline minerality of great Chablis. Servin is now regarded as one of the very top tier producers, after enduring a brief period in the late 90s when a batch of bad corks plagued their reputation. Drink now – 2023.

Chateau Soucherie "Cuvee L'Exception" 2010 (Couteaux de Layon)  A laser-like sweet white wine. The Chenin Blanc, with its naturally high acidity, cuts through the considerable sweetness with ease and gives the wine a sense of lightness, as well as impeccable balance. Drinking well now, and perfect with strong cheeses, the wine will however age effortlessly for many more years - possibly decades. Drink now – 2035.

Quinta la Rosa 1997 Vintage Port  This is a Port built on aromatics and elegance, not brute power. Once decanted, a most intriguing bouquet starts developing, and it has reached its plateau of maturity. Like most Ports, it will remain there for some considerable time and there's no hurry in pulling the cork. Completely hedonistic and a real treat for those of us with a sweet tooth. Drink now – 2032.
