As August draws to a close, we’re celebrating another fantastic year of Tour de Ovacome, where 13 dedicated cyclists came together to raise an incredible £7,253 towards Ovacome’s vital support services.
Inspired by the 21 stages of the Tour de France and the 21 people diagnosed with ovarian cancer every day in the UK, Tour de Ovacome challenges participants to take on a cycling event that puts their own spin on the number 21. This year our cyclists certainly rose to the challenge.
Among the participants were Richard and Corina who took on the impressive endeavour of cycling 21 miles every week throughout August.
Speaking on their decision to participate, Richard highlighted just how many lives are impacted by ovarian cancer:
"Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of gynaecological cancer deaths in the UK, claiming over 4000 lives every year. That equates to 1 woman every 2 hours - the length of our cycle ride today".
By turning cycling into an opportunity to raise awareness, Richard and Corina helped shine a light on a disease that affects thousands of people and their loved ones every year.
For Harry, whose fiancée Natalie has been diagnosed with borderline ovarian cancer, this year’s Tour de Ovacome had a particularly personal meaning.
Alongside his dad, Andrew, Harry spent August cycling 230 kilometres across the Yorkshire wilds, using the challenge to raise both funds and awareness.
"Its been a very difficult year trying to get to terms with everything that we've been dealing with, but Ovacome has been a fantastic resource for us in navigating these challenges."
We are incredibly grateful to every cyclist who took part this year, as well as everyone who sponsored them, cheered them on and helped spread the word. Each mile cycled takes us closer to our mission of ensuring that nobody faces ovarian cancer alone.
