Leaving a gift in your Will

"Ovacome has been such a help and support to me personally. During Covid the tea and chat sessions were a life saver. The stoma group taught me so much and I didn’t feel alone. And now the yoga keeps me calm, and the crafts keep my brain and fingers busy. That’s why I’m leaving Ovacome a gift in my Will."

Leave a lasting legacy

Kind gifts supporters leave in their Wills has enabled Ovacome to continue to be there for anyone affected by ovarian cancer. Your gift could make a vital difference in ensuring that Ovacome’s life-changing support services continue into the future.

Types of Legacies

There are three types of gift you can leave in your Will:

A residuary gift

is a percentage of your estate once any specified gifts have been made to friends and family.

Many of our supporters choose to leave this type of gift because it does not lose value over time and they can ensure that their loved ones are well-looked after first and foremost.

A pecuniary gift

is a specific amount of money.

It’s worth bearing in mind that the effects of inflation mean that this type of gift is likely to lose value over time and may end up being less than you initially intend.

A specific gift

is a gift of a specified item.

Such as a personal possession, land, buildings or stocks and shares.

Tax rules may also mean that if you leave at least 10 per cent of your estate to charity, the Inheritance Tax rate on the rest of your estate may reduce from 40 per cent to 36 per cent. You should seek advice from your solicitor or tax advisor on how these rules may affect you. To find out more about Inheritance Tax, visit HMRC or contact your solicitor. You can find a solicitor at The Law Society of England and Wales or The Law Society of Scotland.

What information do I need to include when leaving a gift to Ovacome

Writing your Will

Your will is an opportunity for you to continue to help and provide for the people you love. Having an up-to-date will is the only way to make sure that your family and friends, and any charities you care about, are provided for as you intended. Dying ‘intestate’ (without a will) means the government will decide the order of who gets what from your estate, irrespective of what you might have wished.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a solicitor?

We would always recommend consulting a solicitor to ensure that all the legal formalities are correctly followed and your will is valid.

How do I choose a solicitor?

The Law Society can help you find a solicitor in your area. For more information please call 020 7242 1222 or visit The Law Society of England and Wales or The Law Society of Scotland.

Can I change my Will?

Adding a codicil to your will means that there is no need to change the terms of your current will, it simply adds a new instruction.
