Help me to make a difference to those affected by ovarian cancer

My mum, Margaret Rose Whicher, died in January 2024 from Ovarian Cancer. In her life she had raised funds for many good causes. She also loved the Isle of Jura - where she had spent many formative holidays. So in her memory (on my 55th birthday) I am running the Isle of Jura Fell Race. The run is a gruelling 2300M+ of climbing over the awe-inspiring 'Paps'. A challenge worthy of her memory and of this important cause.

It is a fitting challenge.

So this leads me to ask if you might help make a real difference to the life of someone affected by ovarian cancer?

I’m raising funds for Ovacome, the national UK charity focused on providing support and information to anyone affected by this disease. Ovacome is a strong community for those who have been diagnosed, those who think that they might be at risk, friends and family, and healthcare professionals.

Ovacome exists to reduce isolation, provide expert information, promote understanding of ovarian cancer and its symptoms, and to support those affected by it in their time of need.

Ovacome’s specialist support team is there to help those living with ovarian cancer navigate their treatment, care and life beyond the disease through the charity’s telephone support line, email, and 24-hour forum. Ovacome also hosts online and in-person groups, workshops, and events where people affected can meet others in similar circumstances, share advice, make friends, and offer encouragement to one another in a safe environment.

Ovacome receives no government funding and so relies on its donors and fundraisers to make its life-changing work possible. Your generosity could help someone affected by ovarian cancer access the vital support and resources they need. Any amount you feel able to give could have a huge impact on the experience of someone facing a diagnosis.

It would mean a lot to me if you could share my fundraising page with your friends, family, colleagues and on your social media.

Tomorrow, I run the Isle of Jura Fell Race.

Friday 22nd May

Getting here has just been another part of the challenge. Over the last 24 hours I’ve travelled by car, train, bus, coach, taxi and lifeboat — then walked the final 5km carrying kit and supplies. I think George Orwell’s word was ‘un-get-at-able’. Well, Jura is that.

For one weekend each year, the population of the island effectively doubles as 250 runners — with families, supporters and awed first-timers like me — arrive to take on one of the toughest and most iconic fell races in the UK. Most gather to camp on the green in front of the Jura Hotel, creating a colourful temporary village built on the physical campaigns that each runner has made to be here.

Tonight we pray the weather forecasts are right; the rain and wind will disappear, the visibility lifts, and a glimpse of sun would not go amiss, too. For tomorrow we head into the hills.

The Jura Fell Race is challenging not so much for its distance, an ultra-half marathon – if there were such a thing - at 28kms. But it’s the tussocky, boggy ground. The sharp ascents and hazardous descents. All of which is enough to deal with if you can see where you are going; so yes please - no rolling mists this year, please. Because then you get to see the sheer scale of ground that you have to cover. It’s hard to explain until you reach the foot of the “Paps” and stand under where you are headed.

I’m here because I wanted to take on something difficult and meaningful in memory of my mum.

This in turn has led me to the work of Ovacome: who support people affected by ovarian cancer. Every donation, message and encouragement has given me a bigger reason to be here. Thank you for supporting me.

Tomorrow. Yep. It’s a big one!

Why Ovacome? Why Jura's Fell Race?

Tuesday 14th Apr
Why Ovacome?
My mum, Rosie Whicher, died of Ovarian Cancer in January 2024. In many ways we were lucky - Mum had first been diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2013; the cancer had been caught early and removed before it had had a chance to progress. It is the realisation that we got seven further healthy years of Mum's life, that makes me recognise and appreciate what it is that Ovacome is doing.

Why Jura's Fell Race?
Early in life Mum was given the wilderness of the Isle of Jura as a playground every summer holiday. Weather that could turn on a pin; teaming wildlife from deer to seals to birds of prey; and the fierce landscape of the Paps - which rise up to awe the landscape around it. She loved it and said that it played a formative role in how she faced life.

Happily she shared this love with many around her; including her grandchildren.

When she learnt that Ovarian Cancer had returned, she decided that we had to get up to Jura one last time. So we did in April 2022. It was following this visit that I said I would like to run the Isle of Jura Fell race in her memory. Knowing how much and mad the commitment was - she laughed - "well if you want to; that'd be lovely!"
