70th Birthday Fundraiser
Following on from the success of my fundraising tea party in the garden on Sunday 28th June, where we raised a magnificent £1,500, I'd like to celebrate my 70th birthday by raising more funds for Ovacome!
Ovacome is the national UK charity focused on providing support and information to anyone affected by this disease. Ovacome was a lifeline for me during the diagnosis, surgery and chemotherapy for ovarian cancer during 2022 and continues to be a support to me today.
I'd always assumed there was just one type of ovarian cancer; I was diagnosed with a rare form and soon found out - through Ovacome - that there are many different forms. Feeling lost, isolated and fearful, I received so much reassurance and hope through Ovacome. Through its programme of seminars, led by experts from hospital and university research departments, I learnt more about my particular cancer, what treatments were available or in development, the genetic basis of some cancers, how to find out about drug trials and more.
Ovacome also runs many Special Interest groups, with their own dedicated WhatsApp groups and regular Zoom meet-ups; through one of these I became part of a community of women living with rare cancers, sharing our experiences, how to deal with the side-effects of chemotherapy, giving each other support on bad days, cheering each other on on good days, talking to each other through the "scanxiety" we all experienced in the days before a scan or other test. Meanwhile, in the Ovacome craft group, our cancer was hardly ever mentioned and we had time to learn a new craft technique (all materials provided!) while forgetting for a blissful 2 hours the disease we had in common.
I attend these groups less often nowadays but I know it is possible my cancer will return - and I know Ovacome's kind and helpful staff will be there at the end of a telephone line if it does.
I hope you will help me raise funds for Ovacome's invaluable work, so they can continue to provide this varied programme of information, advice and support to all women with ovarian cancer.

Fabulous Tea Party!
Tuesday 7th Jul Well, the weather cooled down, the flowers perked up and the table was laden with cakes, scones and cupcakes. At least 60 people came and explored the garden, met friends old & new and sat with tea & cake in one of the shady spots.
